Center for Great Lakes Culture (Michigan State University) -- expands "expand the understanding of the history, people, traditions and customs of the Great Lakes region." It connects and builds "on existing programs at MSU and across the region. Its goal is identify, collect, study, interpret and disseminate the cultural history and expressions of the diverse peoples, traditions and customs of the Great Lakes region and the region's interactions with the world." Council of Great Lakes Governors -- "The Council has one simple mission: To encourage and facilitate environmentally responsible economic growth. This is accomplished by establishing a cooperative effort between the public and private sectors among the eight Great Lakes states and with the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Through the Council, Governors work collectively to ensure that the entire Great Lakes region is both economically sound and environmentally conscious in addressing today's problems and tomorrow's challenges." Great Lakes Commission -- "a binational agency that promotes the orderly, integrated and comprehensive development, use and conservation of the water and related natural resources of the Great Lakes basin and St. Lawrence River...The Commission recognizes and promotes the complementarity of environmental protection and economic goals and has built its reputation on an integrated and objective approach to public policy issues and opportunities." Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (U.S. National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) -- "conducts integrated, interdisciplinary environmental research in support of resource management and environmental services in coastal and estuarine waters, with a special emphasis on the Great Lakes. The laboratory performs field, analytical, and laboratory investigations to improve understanding and prediction of coastal and estuarine processes, and the interdependencies with the atmosphere, and sediments." Great Lakes Fishery Commission -- "...established in 1955 by the Canadian/U.S. Convention on Great Lakes Fisheries. The commission coordinates fisheries research, controls the invasive sea lamprey, and facilitates cooperative fishery management among the state, provincial, tribal, and federal management agencies." Great Lakes Information Network (GLIN) -- "a partnership that provides one place online for people to find information relating to the binational Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region of North America. GLIN offers a wealth of data and information about the region’s environment, economy, tourism, education and more. Thanks to its strong network of state, provincial, federal and regional partner agencies and organizations, GLIN has become a necessary component of informed decisionmaking, and a trusted and reliable source of information for those who live, work or have an interest in the Great Lakes region." Great Lakes National Program Office (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) -- "program monitors Lake ecosystem indicators; manages and provides public access to Great Lakes data; helps communities address contaminated sediments in their harbors; supports local protection and restoration of important habitats; promotes pollution prevention through activities and projects such as the Canada-U.S. Binational Toxics Strategy (BNS); and provides assistance for community-based Remedial Action Plans for Areas of Concern and for Lakewide Management Plans. Each year, GLNPO uses its funding to assist Great Lakes partners in these areas through grants, interagency agreements, and contracts." Last examined on 11/19/02

Great Lakes Natural Resource Center (National Wildlife Federation) -- This site is the Federation's effort to "to protect the lakes from toxic pollution, out-of-control development, and wasteful water use. At the same time, we help provide people from all walks of life with opportunities to enjoy this world-class resource." Last examined on 11/19/02

Great Lakes Protection Fund -- "a private, nonprofit corporation formed in 1989 by the Governors of the Great Lakes States. It is a permanent environmental endowment that supports collaborative actions to improve the health of the Great Lakes ecosystem. The Fund seeks projects which lead to tangible improvements in the health of the Great Lakes ecosystem, promote the interdependence of healthy ecological and economic systems, and are innovative, creative, and venturesome. Current Fund interests include Preventing Biological Pollution, Restoring Natural Flow Regimes and Using Market Mechanisms for Environmental Improvement. Additional projects are sought to add to, and expand Fund supported work in these areas. Support can be in the form of grant awards, loans, or other investment mechanisms. Project ideas are welcome and preproposals may be submitted at any time." Last examined on 11/19/02

Great Lakes Science Center (U.S. Geological Survey) -- "...dedicated to providing scientific information for the management of our nation's biological resources. The Center is headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has biological stations and research vessels located throughout the Great Lakes Basin....Our research spans a range of studies including fish populations and communities, aquatic habitats, terrestrial ecology, nearshore and coastal communities and the biological processes that occur in this complex ecosystem of the Great Lakes. Great Lakes Sea Grant Network -- Part of the U.S. Sea Grant program which transfers "the results of university research to a wide range of audiences and giving special assistance to coastal communities, businesses and individual citizens...Through its network of Advisory Service (Extension) agents and its use of modern communications and education techniques, the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network plays a central role in supplying the region and the nation with usable solutions to pressing problems and providing the basic information needed to better manage Great Lakes resources for present and future generations of Americans." Great Lakes Sport Fishing Council -- Representing a major interest in the resources of the Great Lakes and the Province of Ontario, the Council is "a confederation of organizations and individuals who share a concern for the present and future of sport fishing, our natural and stocked resources and the ecosystem in which we live." The site provides a wealth of information for sports fishing enthusiasts and conservationists. Last examined on 11/19/02

Great Lakes System Review (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) -- "In 1999 Congress provided a broad-range authority to review the feasibility of improving commercial navigation on the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway navigation system, including locks, dams, harbors, ports, channels, and other related features... The study will report on important factors affecting commercial navigation; such as evolving transportation technologies, inter-modal linkages, characteristics of the Great Lakes fleet and changes affecting demand sectors. The study will identify factors and trends that affect commercial navigation on the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway and it will project future trends, commodity flows and the external factors that affect them. International Association for Great Lakes Research -- "a scientific organization made up of researchers studying the Laurentian Great Lakes and other large lakes of the world, as well as those with an interest in such research. Specifically, we promote all aspects of large lakes research; and communicate research findings through publications and meetings. To support these objectives, wehold an Annual Conference, attended by hundreds of Great Lakes researchers; publish the Journal of Great Lakes Research, an interdisciplinary scientific journal with four issues per year; and give out several Awards and Scholarships to recognize excellence in Great Lakes research." International Joint Commission -- "Many rivers and some of the largest lakes in the world lie along, or flow across, the border between the United States and Canada. The International Joint Commission assists governments in finding solutions to problems in these waters. The 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty established the Commission, which has six members... The Commissioners must follow the Treaty as they try to prevent or resolve disputes. They must act impartially, in reviewing problems and deciding on issues, rather than representing the views of their respective governments. The Commission has set up more that 20 boards, made up of experts from the United States and Canada, to help it carry out its responsibilities." Last examined on 11/19/02

Northeast-Midwest Institute -- "a Washington-based, private, non-profit, and non-partisan research organization dedicated to economic vitality, environmental quality, and regional equity for Northeast and Midwest states." Last examined on 11/19/02

Our Great Lakes/Nos Grands Lacs (Environment Canada) -- contains information on Atmosphere, Wildlife, Wetlands, Areas Of Concern, Science, Toxics, and Lakes. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Programs & Projects in the Great Lakes Basin -- "This site provides information about Corps activities and projects within the Great Lakes basin. Our business is to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain navigational channels and flood control measures, and to provide disaster assistance to the nation. We also implement environmental restoration projects as well as regulate shoreline construction and the filling of wetland areas. Our office also has the mission to provide technical support to the International Joint Commission." Last examined on 11/19/02
