CBCA provides access to Canadian periodicals and current affairs information and incorporates the largest and most comprehensive subject guide to periodical literature beginning in 1982 (the MSU Libraries subscription ended in 1996 due to increased cost).. It can be accessed through the Electronic Reference Library. Specific items of; interest include:·

• Over 150 general interest titles in fulltext form (begins with 1993)
• Indexing of over 600 periodicals and eight daily news sources: Canadian Press Newswire, Calgary Herald, Halifax Chronicle Herald, Montreal Gazette, National Post (Oct. 1998-), Toronto Globe & Mail, Toronto Star, Vancouver Sun
• Approximately 200,000 records indexed each year
• More than 30,000 fulltext records added each year ·
• Starting in 1996, a user can focus on business sources ("CBCA Fulltext Business") or on more general-interest topics ("CBCA Fulltext Reference"). If one simultaneously searches both the Business and Reference databases, there will be some overlap of records.

Canadian Periodical Index (CPI)

• Included 400+ Canadian journals as well as 25 American journals, covering Canadian business, Canadian artists, and reviews of books, movies, drama, computer hardware and software. Also indexed poems, short stories, and obituaries.
• A bilingual source (French/English) that indexed scholarly journals.
• Search by author, subject, or corporate name in one alphabet. Subject headings are written in English only, and are subdivided by topic and then geographically. Articles appear alphabetically by title under the subject and name headings.
• Included a list of periodicals indexed in each issue (arranged by subject as well as alphabetically).
• Annual cumulation.

Globe & Mail On CD-ROM

This resource provides coverage to Canada's "newspaper of record", the Globe & Mail of Toronto (1991-1998) plus several other Canadian newspapers (Winnipeg Free Press (1993-1998); Times Colonist of Victoria, B.C. (1993-1998); Financial Times of Canada (1991-March 18, 1995); Alberta's Lethbridge Herald (June 1995-1998); Evening Telegraph of St. Johns, Nwfld.) (Au -Nov. 1995); Charlottetown, P.E.I.'s Guardian (June 1995-Dec. 31, 1995). It is stored at the MSU Library's Digital & Multimedia Center AP5 .G53 CD-ROM.

Contains:

• ll the articles written by journalists
• all the editorials and all the editor's standpoints
• all the articles issued by press agencies
• all the letters to the editor
• all the columns, all the series, etc.
• all the news in brief
• all the illustration tags (textual content)

Does not contain:

• photos, caricatures and other illustrations
• graphs and statistics tables
• classified ads, advertisements (except appointment notices from Report on Business of The Globe and Mail)
• stock market reports
• horoscopes, reports, obituary columns, cultural and sporting events
• calendar, public notices, etc.

Choosing Years to Search

After after loading the CD-ROM, a window with the label "The Globe and Mail on CD-ROM" will appear. If one wants to search the entire database, one can just begin searching. If one wants to search a particular time period, there are two options:

1. The simplest is choosing the "Search" option, then choosing "Date". A window appears, giving "Start" and "End" options.
2. A more complex way is choosing the "File" option, then choosing "Open a Database." A "Database Selection" window appears. Choose the appropriate drive for the corresponding date: G=1991-1992; H=1993; I=1994; J=1995; K=1996; L= 1997; M=1998

Lexis-Nexis North/South American News Sources

A subset of the Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe, it contains full-text articles from dozens of newspapers, magazines, and scholarly journals that devote thorough coverage to Canada and Latin America. It includes these prominent prominent publications:

An online version of the venerable Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, this resource indexes popular periodicals published in the U.S. and Canada. Includes current events and news, fine arts, fashion, education, business, sports, health and nutrition, consumer affairs, and others. Coverage begins with 1983. It can be accessed through First Search.
